January 19 - March 31, 2007

Bryan Memorial Gallery presents BEHIND CLOSED DOORS: SNOWSCAPES from January 19 through March 31.  In the West Gallery an invitational exhibition of Snowscapes features 90 paintings by 33 New England artists including Mark Tougias, Nathalie Nordstrand, Elizabeth Nelson, T. A. Charron and Robert Duffy.  In the East Gallery an exhibition of Snowscapes from the Bryan Gallery's permanent collection features paintings by Alden Bryan and Mary Bryan and other artists including Emile Gruppe and Tom Nicholas, NA.

The West Gallery Exhibition includes works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel and printmaking by Vermont and New England artists who are reputed to be among the most outstanding landscape and plein air painters working today.  The unifying theme of their work in this exhibition is its subject - snow.  In inviting the participation of the 33 artists, Bryan Gallery executive Director Mickey Myers asked the artists for paintings of "deep snow...not thaws or springtime dustings but deep, deep snow."  While in some cases, Myers reports this assignment presented a challenge to artists living in less wintery conditions than usual this season, all invitees rose to the occasion - in some cases finishing paintings that had begun last year.
